Jira is a freelance professional makeup artist and
hairstylist in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has almost two decades of
experience covering weddings, anniversaries and other important events.
Fourteen years ago she discovered that all women have imperfections, however,
they can look beautiful and unique in their own special way. According to her,
"It’s about knowing my clients lifestyle and personality. It’s because
every woman has her own unique characteristics and individuality that I can
create the perfect look. The challenge is to meet every clients expectation and
desires by listening to them. That's what makes me a successful stylist.
“Each woman's skin tone, bone structure and hair color is
different, but by applying the perfect color, shade and the right hairstyle to
fit her personality, It will bring out the best in her." Being in the
business for many years as a professional makeup artist and hairstylist, She
defines an effective makeup artist as someone who knows that it's all about
applying the right color and right teachquine on a woman face. Creating a new
look for clients is a challenge for every artist/stylist. As a stylist you need
to know your client. Once you get to know them, you understand what techniques
to use and an idea of how to create a wonderful new look. This new look will
give her the confidence to face the world."
Despite numerous degrees and certificates, Jira continues to
learn her craft, giving her clients an experience and beauty they will treasure
for a lifetime. She is currently working with more than 17 stylists under her
supervision. In addition, Wowpretty is soon expanding to Southern California
and Asia.
While working on her masters degree in Communication Arts,
Jira realized her inclinations towards makeup and signed up at Makeup
Techniques International Co., Ltd 1993 (MTI). She then studied hair updo and
hairstyles in Taiwan in 1994. In 1999, she went to study advanced make-up in
Lille, France. In 2000, she decided to come to the United States to study
makeup for theater, film and TV. While in the United States, Jira studied
Advanced Air brush at Kett cosmetics in San Francisco at Kryolan Makeup School.
She also joined Face and Body Art International for Hands On Training. Jira
also received a hair stylist's license in cosmetology, and has taken advanced
classes from Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles. She has also won a hairstyling
contest in Santa Cruz, California and received recognition of excellence from
Zensi's Cosmetology.
Jira means a rainbow or colors- “Colors for Artistry”.
WowPretty! -What you say to a beautiful woman when you first meet. A groom,
when he sees his bride in her white dress, in her makeup with her hair done to
perfection, says “WowPretty!!!”
Jira arrived in the USA in 2000 to get her MBA at Golden
Gate University. Within 6 months at the University, her life changed. She
started a new career. Since she arrived in USA, she has had non stop bookings
for her to be a makeup artist for weddings, studios, photo shoots, and events
of all kinds. She can’t stop to say “NO” to clients. Of course at the same
time, she has always a great time what she does and want to just make everyone
feel good and feel better in their own skin. It is not about money that she
makes but it is all about clients who love her artistry.
Back to her hometown 7 years before she came to USA, she had
worked several years for a makeup artist. She was a manager at Tonrak studios
in Thailand. In that time she supervised 9 makeup artists around her.
In 2006 she received her Cosmetology License in the United
States (even though she has a cosmetology license in France). in the U.S. she
and friends have a salon together in San Mateo, California.
Wowpretty.com was born in 2000. Wowpretty is a makeup and
hair company that provides what you need and want to know about beauty in our
studio, salon or your location.
In 2012, Wowpretty Professional Makeup and Hair changed to
be Wowpretty Professional Makeup and Hair Agency to accommodate a continually
growing clientele.
Currently, Wowpretty is composed of 17 professional
stylists. These stylists are Jira (Founder), 9 Master Stylists, and 8 Senior
Stylists. These stylists are all professionally trained to go through a master
screening process. They each have at least 10 years experience with airbrush
technique, cosmetology licenses, and use their talents to bring out each
bride’s unique style.
There are two locations in the San Francisco Bay Area – one
in downtown Burlingame and another one in San Mateo. They are now in their 19th
year. And in the same year (2012), Wowpretty Professional Makeup and Hair
officially launched "Jira Couture", a new line of Hypoallergenic,
Multi-Use, Anti Aging, Mineral cosmetics.
In 2013, Wowpretty's new baby was born Makeup Lessons.
Jira's clients asked for Makeup Lessons and she couldn't say “NO”. Makeup and
Hair Lessons exceeded 500 clients for the last part of 2013. This class
happened because the Wowpretty Team realizes and hears how important a woman's
beauty is in her life. "We have created private makeup, skin care and hair
classes offer to everyone who needs and wants to understand what beauty is.
Learn advanced tricks for your everyday rush hour, tricks for picking the right
product without wasting time and money. Read more!!
Not just that. Wowpretty will provide a makeup class at your

My Interview with Celebrity Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist,
Amanda Shackleton:
VICKI :It’s truly a pleasure to interview you Amanda. As a
well recognized celebrity makeup and hairstylist in the industry, what was your
inspiration to become involved in the beauty business?
AMANDA: My inspiration to be in the beauty industry wasn’t
something that I even realized until I was 21. I have always loved fashion and
grew up in an artistic household (my Dad was an artist), so I was comfortable
painting with him in his studio from a young age. I was in college for physical
therapy in the Mid West and being from NY, I had a different fashion sense than
most of my friends. They would always end up in my room on the weekends asking
me to do their hair and make up, and ask to borrow clothes to wear. It was
actually my parents who suggested I would be better at an art school, so when I
moved to London with my Mum and Dad at age 20, I went to school for both hair
& make up and that’s how it began. London offered so much creative
inspiration for me.
VICKI: We both have an appreciation for the timeless and
classic look of “Old Hollywood”! Would you be able to share a few hints with
our readers on how they might transition their look into a more classic ageless
look of that Glamorous “Era” gone by?
AMANDA : Transitioning your look to Hollywood glam is much
easier than you think. People get intimidated and think its a hard look to pull
off, but really its very simple. My best suggestion is to watch the old
Hollywood films and see how the women wore their hair and make up.
I love old school hot rollers, they heat up quickly and once
you have set your hair, you can go ahead and do your make up. I suggest keeping
a lighter eye and emphasizing your brows and lips. Don’t forget to practice
putting on false eyelashes, they do not have to be big and obvious, just cut a
small set in half and practice applying them to the outer corners of your eyes.
This will make all the difference in your make up look.
Then go back and pull out your rollers, give your hair a
spray and run your fingers through your hair in the direction you would like
the curls to go. They should be bouncier and not too brushed out, so just keep
practicing!!
VICKI: You founded the Media Makeup Academy that is now in
two locations ~ Chicago and New York. What qualities do you believe a person
who wants to get into a career in the makeup artistry profession needs to
possess?
AMANDA: Founding Media Make Up Academy has always been a
dream of mine so when I began teaching I'd always tell my students tenacity is
a key quality to make it in the industry. All of my students dream of working
with magazines and celebrities but its a long road and you cannot get deterred.
There’s a lot of competition and rejection but if you keep practicing and
networking while building your portfolio, you will eventually get there.
VICKI: A bride’s special day is so important and can end up
being a rather stressful day after all of the pre planning for her wedding.
Your company NY Bridal Beauty sounds like a perfect solution. What is your main
objective as you prepare a bride for her special day?
AMANDA: When I opened NY Bridal Beauty my main objective was
to bring high end hair and make up services to brides in their homes and hotels
so they didn’t have the extra stress of running to a salon. We set up a trial
and do numerous looks about 6-9 months in advance so we can get the style down
perfectly.Trials are pretty intense and we do a lot of work, so once the bride
trusts my aesthetic and what we have done it makes her wedding day a little
less stressful.
VICKI : What’s trending for brides with hair and makeup
looks, right now?
AMANDA: I’ve noticed a definite change in styles I am being
asked to do for my brides.Without a doubt we are trending back to über feminine
hair styles with a vintage vibe. Brides are also looking up to celebrities at
award shows so the hair and make up is more “red carpet” than the traditional
bridal looks of the past.
VICKI: Would you please share a few ideas about creating a
look that will have the readers on the “cutting fashion” edge for any special
events they will be attending ?
AMANDA: Fashion changes so much so I would suggest they find
a current look and making it their own. I would concentrate on either hair or
make up and make a statement with it. Whatever they decide to do, make sure it
fits their look and style and they feel like themselves. I’m seeing a lot of vintage
inspired hair combs and barrettes right now and I think they are a great way to
add a little dazzle to a person's hair style.
Thank you so much for all of your wonderful answers to my
questions. They were exceptional, and sharing your time with us has been so
appreciated and enjoyed. I’ve learned so much and I know the readers will be
thrilled with all of your wonderful hints and techniques. Let your “Magic”
continue, Amanda, and all the best to you in 2013!
Amanda’s many years of hard work and dedication have awarded
her with numerous credits, here are just a few:
